Sources and licenses

Hafiz Quran is free and has no ads or paid features. Everything it shows comes from the sources below, and their rights stay with their owners. Some of them allow only non-commercial use, so this site is meant to stay free and non-commercial unless the owners give permission.

Quran text

The Arabic text is the Uthmani text of the Tanzil Project, used under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license with its extra conditions: the text is shown unchanged, the source is credited and linked, and the copyright notice stays with it.

We obtain it through the AlQuran Cloud API (Islamic Network). The only differences from the file as delivered are that the Basmalah the API adds in front of ayah 1 of most surahs is removed, so each ayah shows only its own text, and invisible byte-order marks are dropped. No letters or marks are changed.

  • Tanzil Project — Quran text, © Tanzil Project. License: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 with the conditions on tanzil.net/docs/text_license.

Tajwid colors

The rule labels come from the “quran-tajweed” edition of the AlQuran Cloud API and are matched letter by letter onto the text above; the text itself is not taken from that edition. The source does not state a separate license for this markup. The explanations in the tajwid guide were written for this project and have not been reviewed by a qualified teacher.

Translations and transliteration

The Indonesian translation and the transliteration are provided by the Tanzil Project, which allows its translations for non-commercial purposes only. Copyright remains with the translators and publishers.

The English translation is by Marmaduke Pickthall (The Meaning of the Glorious Koran, 1930). He died in 1936 and the translation is in the public domain; the text is from Project Gutenberg.

  • Indonesian translation — Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia), as listed by Tanzil.
  • English translation (Pickthall) — Marmaduke Pickthall, public domain. Text: Project Gutenberg ebook #16955.
  • Transliteration — English transliteration as provided by Tanzil.

Audio recitations

Each ayah is streamed from everyayah.com. The recordings are the work of the reciters listed below and are copyright of the reciters or their producers. everyayah.com does not publish a license for them. They are used here for free, non-commercial listening and study.

What this project wrote itself

The Indonesian meanings of the surah names, the tajwid explanations, the list of similar ayat (found automatically by comparing words) and all the app's text are this project's own. They have not been reviewed by a qualified scholar, and corrections are welcome.
